How to Cook Rice

???? 1. Measure Your Rice

Start with however much rice you want.

Example:
1 cup rice = about 2 servings

???? 2. Rinse the Rice

Add your rice to a bowl and fill it with water.
Swirl it around with your hand.

Drain the water.

Repeat 2–3 times.

You don’t need to overdo it.
Just rinse until the water is less cloudy.

???? 3. Add Water

???? If all else fails: equal parts rice and water

My go-to ratios:

Jasmine Rice
1 cup rice : 1¼ cups water

Korean / Japanese Rice
1 cup rice : 1 cup water

Sweet (Sticky) Rice
1 cup rice : about ⅔–1 cup water

???? 4. Cook
Rice Cooker (Easiest):

Add rice and water
Press cook
Let it do its thing

Stovetop:

Bring to a boil
Once boiling, cover and reduce to low
Cook for 12–15 minutes
Turn off heat and let sit (covered) for 5–10 minutes

Do NOT keep opening the lid.

???? 5. Fluff

Once it’s done:
Use a rice paddle or fork
Gently fluff the rice

This keeps it from getting dense or mushy.

???? Nay’s Tips

Don’t skip rinsing — it makes a difference.

Don’t overwater — that’s how you get mushy rice.

Let it sit after cooking — this is key.

???? Final Tip

If you mess it up the first time, it’s okay.

Rice is one of those things you learn by doing.
After a few tries, you won’t even have to think about it anymore.

And once you get it down, every meal hits different.

Hi, I’m Naomi, but my friends call me Nay. I’m a home cook who loves creating meals that are simple, cozy, and full of flavor. I learned to cook from the women who shaped me. My Japanese mother was an amazing cook and her family owned restaurants, and my biological mother owns a restaurant too. Cooking has always been in my blood.
